Why I Created
Mahjong Social House
How a weekly Mahjong Game Inspired a Community
Mahjong Social House began with a single question that a friend asked a bunch of us moms one day during a play date with our daughters, "Anyone interested in learning mahjong?"
Not all that long ago, a friend and I signed up to learn mahjong together. What started as curiosity after another friend said I would love it, quickly became an obsession. I was immediately drawn to the strategy, the challenge and the endless opportunities to learn and improve and then the culture and all the beautiful tiles and tablescapes.
But what surprised me most wasn't the game itself- it was what happened around the table.
After our first lessons, we began recruiting friends to learn with us so we can form a regular group. Before long, I found myself encouraging others to learn the game and trying to create opportunities for people to gather and play.
Our weekly mahjong games soon became the highlight of my week.
For a few hours life slows down. Phones are put away. We laugh, catch up, challenge our minds and enjoy genuine conversation without distractions of everyday life. There is something uniquely rewarding about sitting around a table with friends and sharing an experience that is both social and intellectually engaging. I always leave our weekly mahjong sessions feeling energized and ready to take on the day!
The more I played, the more I realized that what I loved wasn't just mahjong - it was the connection it created. I'm sure it's why mahjong is experiencing such a remarkable resurgence. While the game itself is timeless, it is fulfilling a need that feels especially relevant today.
In an increasingly digital world, people are are craving meaningful ways to gather in person. They are searching for places and opportunities where they can learn something new and fun, build friendships, feel welcomed and become part of a community.
It is that realization that became the inspiration for Mahjong Social House.
Mahjong Social House was created to be more than just a place to play a game. It is a welcoming community for learning, gathering and connecting - a place where beginners can feel comfortable taking their first lessons, experienced players can find a regular game and everyone can experience the joy and tradition of spending time around the table together.
My hope is that Mahjong Social House becomes the kind of place where friendships are formed, traditions are created and people leave feeling the same sense of connection and belonging that inspired me to create it.
Welcome to Mahjong Social House.
